Fern Coppedge

Born in Decatur, Illinois in 1883, Fern Coppedge went on to become one of the most prominent figures of Pennsylvania Impressionism. Though she spent her early years in the Midwest, her artistic career truly flourished in Pennsylvania, where she became closely associated with the New Hope School of American Impressionism, the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance. Fern Coppedge was also a member of the Philadelphia Ten, a progressive group of female artists who exhibited together for over 25 years, creating opportunities for women in a male-dominated art world.

Coppedge studied at several leading institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League of New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she refined her skills under influential teachers. Throughout her career, she earned recognition through numerous awards, such as the Shillard Medal in Philadelphia, a Gold Medal from the Exposition of Women’s Achievements, a Gold Medal from the Plastics Club of Philadelphia, and the Kansas City H.O. Dean Prize for Landscape. These honors reflected her growing reputation as an innovative and respected painter.

She became best known for her vibrant, snow-covered landscapes of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Unlike many of her contemporaries, who often favored muted palettes, Coppedge embraced bold, saturated colors that brought a unique vitality to her impressionist style. Her depictions of villages, farms, and riverscapes—paintings such as Autumn Gold, Bucks County Scene, Lumberville Cottage, Spring on the Delaware, and The Delaware Reflections—captured both the tranquility and brilliance of rural Pennsylvania.

Coppedge remained committed to her artistic practice and community until her death in New Hope, Pennsylvania on April 21, 1951, at the age of 67. Today, she is remembered not only for her luminous landscapes but also for her role in advancing women’s visibility in American art.
